Care Instructions

Delicate tailoring materials deserve delicate care. Follow this guide to handle, clean and store your appliqués, trims and embellishments so they stay as luminous as the day you sourced them.

Handling

Delicate appliqués, rhinestone trims and beaded pieces are fragile by nature. A few habits keep them intact.

  • Work with clean, dry hands — oils and lotions dull metallic finishes and crystal stones.
  • Lay pieces flat when measuring or cutting; never pull or stretch beaded mesh or sequin strips.
  • Use smooth, non-serrated scissors to trim edges and avoid snagging threads.
  • Store pieces you're not actively using out of direct reach to prevent accidental snags.

Cleaning

Most appliqués and trims are not washable. Spot-treat only when necessary and always test a hidden edge first.

  • Blot stains gently with a soft, barely damp cloth — never rub or soak.
  • Avoid water on rhinestone, cup-chain and crystal pieces; moisture loosens settings and dulls sparkle.
  • Feather trims can be lightly steamed from a distance to refresh, then air-dried flat.
  • Never machine-wash or dry-clean finished garments with glued appliqués — hand-clean around the embellishment.

Protecting

Heat, friction and chemicals are the main enemies of delicate materials.

  • Keep away from direct heat — irons, steamers and sunlight can melt adhesives and discolour metallic coatings.
  • Apply perfumes, deodorants and hairspray before dressing; chemicals react with gold and AB finishes.
  • Minimise friction against rough surfaces which can abrade sequins and beads.
  • If ironing a finished garment, press from the reverse side on a low, dry setting.

Storing

Proper storage is the single biggest factor in longevity.

  • Store flat in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton-lined box to prevent crushing and tangling.
  • Keep rhinestone strips and cup chains rolled — never folded — to avoid cracking the setting.
  • Store feathers and fabric flowers upright in a dry container to preserve their shape.
  • Keep away from humidity and damp; silica gel sachets help in humid Nigerian climates.
  • Avoid airtight plastic for long periods — it can trap moisture and cause mildew on fabric pieces.

Do & Don't

✓ Hang finished embellished garments padded and flat

✗ Fold heavy beadwork — it cracks along the crease

✓ Brush feathers gently to restore volume

✗ Wet or wash feather trims

✓ Keep metallic trims in a cool, dark drawer

✗ Leave trims in direct sunlight or near windows

✓ Trim loose threads with small scissors

✗ Pull loose threads — it unravels the beadwork
